Exploring India in style: Our unforgettable journey with Uniworld River Cruises

There are trips that you remember—and then there are trips that truly change you. Our famil through India with Uniworld River Cruises was one of those once-in-a-lifetime journeys that left us both completely in awe.

We weren’t sure what to expect before we left. We’d seen the itinerary and the glossy images, but nothing prepared us for the depth of culture, the warmth of the people, or the way India got under our skin in the best possible way.

Life along the Ganges

Our journey began aboard Uniworld’s Ganges Voyager II, an elegant, intimate ship designed for discovery and reflection. As we cruised the Ganges River, we found ourselves mesmerized—not just by the scenery, but by the small, everyday moments playing out along the riverbanks.

We passed children waving with huge smiles, women in vibrant saris washing clothes, and farmers tending to their land. There was something humbling about watching life unfold so simply and beautifully around us.

Each day brought new experiences. In Kalna, we explored breathtaking temples covered in intricate terracotta carvings. Chandernagore charmed us with its faded colonial beauty and quiet streets. And Kolkata was a vibrant whirlwind—a city full of contrast and emotion. A highlight for both of us was visiting Mother Teresa’s home, a powerful and grounding experience that left us speechless.

Evenings on the ship were the perfect balance of relaxation and connection. Some nights we joined yoga on deck as the sun dipped low. Other nights, we sipped cocktails with fellow travellers under the stars, reflecting on the day. The service onboard was second to none—warm, personal, and genuinely thoughtful in every detail.

From river to royal cities

After our time on the Ganges, we swapped river cruising for the bustling energy of India’s famed Golden Triangle: Jaipur, Agra, and Delhi.

Jaipur swept us off our feet with its colorful architecture, ornate palaces, and bustling markets. Standing inside the Amber Fort, looking out over the hills, felt like being transported into a storybook. Every moment was full of color, energy, and culture.

Then came Agra—and with it, the incredible Taj Mahal. We arrived just before sunset, and watching the light change across that stunning white marble was something we’ll never forget. It’s one of those places you think you’ve already “seen” in photos, but in person, it’s on an entirely different level.

Delhi brought a whole new rhythm to our adventure. It was fast, busy, complex—and so full of life. One of our favorite experiences was a rickshaw ride through the buzzing Old Delhi markets. It was chaotic, loud, colorful, and absolutely brilliant.

Comfort, care & connection

Throughout the trip, we stayed at Oberoi hotels, and they were absolutely divine. The level of care and comfort they offered after long, adventure-filled days was such a treat. Think serene pools, deep bathtubs, five-star service, and tranquil views that made us pause and just breathe.

These hotels weren’t just a place to rest—they were part of the journey. Every stay felt curated and calming, a perfect counterpoint to the sensory richness of India outside the doors.

Why it mattered

This famil was a condensed version of Uniworld’s India’s Golden Triangle & the Sacred Ganges tour—but even in its shortened form, it gave us a profound connection to India. We didn’t just see temples and landmarks—we felt the heartbeat of this incredible country.

What stood out most to both of us was how Uniworld crafted every detail with intention. The balance of immersive cultural experiences and moments of reflection, the seamless transitions, the genuine warmth of the crew and guides—it all created space for something deeper. We weren’t just tourists passing through. We were travelers, welcomed into a story much bigger than ourselves.

If you’re curious about India but unsure where to start, we can’t recommend this journey enough. It’s immersive yet luxurious, soul-stirring yet easy to navigate, and deeply rewarding on every level.

We came home changed—inspired by what we saw, moved by what we felt, and filled with gratitude for an experience we’ll never forget.
