I recently had the privilege of participating in an extraordinary adventure through Turkey, hosted by Turkish Airlines, alongside over 200 travel professionals from across the globe. Far more than a typical familiarisation trip, this immersive experience offered a profound exploration of Turkey’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and world-renowned hospitality.

Istanbul: A city where history meets modernity

Our journey began in Istanbul, a city where centuries of history coexist with contemporary energy. From the grandeur of its mosques and palaces to the vibrant atmosphere of its markets and the tranquil beauty of the Bosphorus at sunset, Istanbul is a city that both inspires and enchants. Each experience — whether culinary, cultural, or architectural — offered deep insight into Turkey’s unique identity as a crossroads between continents.

Laodicea: Ancient ruins, timeless stories

Our next stop was Laodicea, a lesser-known archaeological site that holds significant historical importance. Walking through the remarkably preserved ruins — including theatres, temples, and colonnaded streets — was a powerful reminder of the region’s deep historical roots. The sense of connection to the ancient world was palpable and enriching.

 

Pamukkale: Nature’s masterpiece

From there, we travelled through Denizli to reach Pamukkale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its surreal white travertine terraces and mineral-rich thermal waters. The landscape was both otherworldly and restorative — a testament to the natural beauty that defines so much of Turkey.

 

Afyonkarahisar: A cultural and culinary haven

In Afyonkarahisar, we experienced a town known for its thermal springs and culinary excellence. Here, the focus shifted to wellness and gastronomy — indulgent local cuisine, traditional sweets, and therapeutic spa treatments created a multisensory experience that highlighted the restorative power of travel.

 

Izmir: coastal charm and contemporary flair

Next, we arrived in Izmir, a dynamic coastal city with a relaxed yet cosmopolitan atmosphere. Its seaside promenades, thriving café culture, and creative energy presented a refreshing modern contrast to the historical sites we had visited. Izmir exemplifies the balance between tradition and progress that defines modern Turkey.

Ephesus: A living legacy of the ancient world

Our journey concluded at Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world. Walking its marble streets and standing in the shadow of the Library of Celsus and the grand amphitheatre brought history vividly to life. For travellers with a passion for archaeology, architecture, or history, Ephesus is an unmissable destination.  It really did feel like I was walking at the very start of time.  This is here where Turkish Airways hosted a grand dining soiree in the midst of the ancient city.  We were celebrated with all the local delicacies, harmonised by the local symphony orchestra.  The desired effect achieved, forever etched in our memories
